Chinese Wedding Dinner

Well it's that time of year again, Weddings start popping up all over the place. Just attended my missus's cousin wedding this weekend. Big event and the missus took leave on Friday to get her hair done for the weekend. When she got back I almost could not recognise her. What's with the wavy, curly stuff I asked. She said it's something new she wanted to try out. You look like someone familiar I said, ya she told me 'Whoopi Goldberg'. That's right and she's called Whoopi from today onwards.

It's seems that for Chinese Wedding's, some things change some don't. I've notice for one that the first walk in which previously usually had that dry ice effect has been cut out, most go for flowers (Petals) and bubbles being showered on the bride and groom. Some even had rice but not many people go that direction, probably hotel rules and the price of rice had something to do with that. The traditional first dish has become more and more elaborate. No more simply marching in and placing the first dish on the table I've notice elaborate first dish routines from masquerading service staff in full phatom of the opera action, dancing chefs, fireworks in the dish (ok not fireworks per say, just sparklers) and even the entire service staff doing a dance routine on stage but the one that takes the cake was got to be the conductor. Most of the younger people also are environment savvy and some do stay away from Shark's Fin altogether, that's a really welcome thing, even my parents have started to stop eating Shark's Fin and at our family gatherings at seafood restaurant's, Shark's Fin is a no no.

However the lateness of guest is still a problem, have yet to get to a wedding that starts at 8pm. The traditional 'yam seng' is ever present, can't call it a wedding if you don't have one. The customary photo taking, pouring of tea and morning haggling (or bribery / black mail) of the poor guy to get to his bride is still there depending on your customs.

One little grip I have with the service staff is that they should know their drinks. Especially the soft drinks. You know how during the cocktail part before the dinner starts there usually are service staff around who carry a variety of drinks normally orange (a must have), water, sprite/7-up, coke/pepsi, wine and beer. These are the standard stuff. I go up to one and ask the guy 'Is that coke' and he says yes. I took it and one sip and I knew it's Pepsi. Now I'm a Coke drinker, never can stand Pepsi, it just makes me want to throw up. I know my Coke from my Pepsi. I don't even need to taste it I can smell the difference. I really hate it when people thing they are the same. They are not !! Coke is Coke - The Real Thing and Pepsi is just running a close second. I really wish they know what is coke and what is pepsi and not get them both mixed up.
